Smart Phone Apps for ICU and OR

in ICU

Technology is so Wonderful, Isn’t It?

So you’re not going to lug a big heavy textbook (or 10) into the OR or into the ICU right? Right. That’s why smart phone apps are great for students or newbies who need a handy resource that is also portable and discrete.

There are a ton of free apps that are good but it seems like they’re always missing something. That’s why Critical for iPhone is my favorite app so far- it gives you everything you need in ONE PLACE. Honestly, it’s probably worth it’s price simply for the RSI (Rapid Sequence Intubation) information alone!

I started to type up a list of all the information housed in this app but I got bored after about the first minute. There is definitely way too much to list out. Highlights for me include Intra Aortic Balloon Pump Monitoring, Pacemaker Modes, Vent Management, EKG reference, the ridiculous amount of easy to use Rapid Sequence Intubation Information, and all of the calculators. You can calculate Anion Gap, tPA, Burn fluid replacement, etc.

But Wait, There’s More…

There is also excellent information about ICU Drips (Amio, Dilt, Nimbex, Heparin, etc.). This information is normally very difficult to find- believe me- I remember googling it all the time as a new graduate.

And, Critical for iPhone has a great Medical Spanish tool. Not only is the phrase listed for you in English and Spanish, BUT it also has an audio file that will teach you the proper pronunciation so you don’t ask your patient if they have money instead of have pain (<– I’ve done that before).

Here are a few screenshots if you don’t want to take my word on how great this app is…

 Get Critical Today!

Check out the website here, or better yet go to iTunes and download Critical. I challenge you to find a better product out there for the money…
